Obesity
In the last 30 years the number of fast food restaurants in business have multiplied, and obesity has too. Society blames fast food restaurants for the main reason of current world obesity. Obesity is considered a medical condition; being overweight by having too much body fat. Obesity happens over time when more energy(calories) is consumed than what is burned. Obesity increases the risk of health problems for an example: diabetes, cancer and other medical conditions. In the United States alone, more than 78 million which is over 30 percent of adults are obese with 23.9 million children from age 2 to 19 being overweight or obese(1). By early in the 21st Century the amounts of fast food restaurants in the United States business has increased dramatically; In the 1970 about 30,000 fast food restaurant were in business and by 2001, about 222,000 were in business(2).
Its not just fast food, junk food as well causes obesity. If people didn't eat so much fast food or junk food obesity’s numbers wouldn't be so high. Even though more people are being active, it does not balance the increase of obesity. The cause of obesity is lack of balancing energy(calories) intake. Since the 70s the amount of calories people intake has increased. People eat 250 more calories every day then is burned and over time its adds up to body fat weight. Obesity is measured using a Body Mass Index (BMI). BMI is a simple index that measures the relative weight based on the person's mass and height. Having a BMI of 25 to 29.9 is considered being overweight and a BMI greater than 30 is considered obesity. In the 20 years the average overweight/obesity BMI has increased steeply from 13 percent in 1993 to 24 percent in 2011 in

men and from 16 percent to 26 percent in women. (1)
Even though obesity is a major crucial health problem worldwide; it can cause other major health problems such as heart disease, cancer and can even cause death. Other health problems obesity can cause, including:
There are other problems that people think is the cause of obesity, such as the environment. The argument is that our environment doesn’t support a healthy lifestyle and that it actually encourages obesity; there are not enough parks, sidewalks, trails and affordable gyms so it makes it hard for people to stay physically active. Most restaurants, fast food restaurants, gas stations, supermarkets even at home the food portions are way oversized, for every one person there is enough to feed two or more people. With more food on the plate; its means that there is more energy(calories) being consumed. most people feel that they are surrounded by ads that fast food companies spend billions of dollars to create. Also there is a lack of access to healthy foods. some people live in place where there is no access to markets that sell healthy foods. Even if there was, some people can't afford it(3).
Other arguments for causes of obesity is that certain medicines can cause people to gain weight. Some of this medicine can increase people’s appetite and slow down the rate which the body burns energy, or can cause the body to hold on to extra water weight. All of those side effects can lead to weight gain. Emotions can play a role in obesity; when people are bored, angry or stressed they seem to eat more which leads to gaining weight and over time to obesity.
Some people witness weight gain when they have quit smoking, after pregnancy, lack of sleep, some health condition that have a lead to obesity. Age can also be a possibility; as a person gets older they seem to lose muscle, especially if they’re less physically active, muscle loss slows down the rate the body burns energy(calories) and if a persons does not reduce their calorie intake they can gain weight.(3) one of the biggest reasons why people eat unhealthy foods, eat more amounts of it and the reason why people are obese; is because the fats and sugar in the foods can be addicting. Sugar activates the same part of the brain as addictive drugs. thats why people get the feeling of needing to eat foods with high fat and high sugar amount. Even when people know that eating unhealthy food is bad for them and it harms them physically and medically they can’t stop that feeling.
Even though critics blame the fast food restaurants and other concepts for obesity, it’s a person’s own problem for being obese. However, the real fact is that people are getting more lazy and less motivated to eat healthy. Its a person’s choice to not be physically active or to eat unhealthy. There can be other problems connected that can lead to obesity, but, the only way to prevent obesity is by eating healthy and staying physically active. There are more people being physically active but worldwide the percentage is low. In the United States more than one in every fourth person doesn’t spend anytime exercising, people choose to not be physically active. People make their own life choices and they choose to eat unhealthy. If people choose to consume all the foods with high calories, and fat its the person’s own responsibility for obesity. No one demands them to pull over and waste money on fast food restaurants or stops them from exercising. There are disabilities that prevent people from being physically active either way they can always eat healthy. There are other problems that can prevent people from eating healthy and/or being physically active and those people have excuses. But the people that choose to eat so unhealthy and not get any physical exercise, don't have an excuse. The world needs to find a solution to this major life problem; humans suffering from obesity can commit to change their eating lifestyle and be physically active.
Most people are busy with their jobs and family, but anything time a person can go to gym or do something that keeps them physically active to burn calories it would be beneficial. People can also try to eat healthy, they can set up a diet plan and stay committed to accomplish losing weight to live healthier lifestyle.(5) Parents and schools can educate kids more about nutrition, teach them how to eat healthy, stay active and teach them about the foods they’re eating so when they grow up they can make better choices about their eating lifestyle. Schools need to intervene more health classes teaching kids about nutrition, they need more classes that keep the kids more active. Parents need to feed their kids healthy foods while growing up so they can invest in a lifestyle where they eat healthy and stay active. Another solution that can help lower the percentage of obesity is lower the cost for healthy food; we live in a generation where unhealthy foods with high fat cost less per day than healthy foods. The healthiest food cost an average of a dollar and fifty cents less than most unhealthy foods. If fruits and vegetables were cheaper more people would buy more amounts.(6) Another big help for obesity is to grow your own natural fruits and vegetables. Growing your own foods can improve your health by eating fresher fruits and vegetables and the amounts of vitamin percentage is higher. Benefits of growing your own foods is you save more money on groceries and you get outdoor exercise by planting and watering the plants, you get to enjoy better tasting foods. For people that don’t have the access to planting foods buying vegetable and fruits from a community garden is an option.(7)
Obesity is a big conflict worldwide, which harms million of people including children. Even though the world considers obesity a medical condition, its mostly a persons fault of being obese because of the choices they make of how they live their lifestyle. Everyone who suffers from obesity can prevent the sickness or fight against it, by choosing to live a healthy lifestyle by eating healthy and being physically active. Society needs to be a big part of preventing bigger percentage of people suffering from obesity in the future. The biggest thing society can do to help is lower the cost of healthy foods, offer more opportunities to be physically active and encourage people to choose a healthy lifestyle. A problem is that people blame the food industry and fast food restaurants for the numbers of obese Americans, when its the persons choice to eat the foods. A way to prevent obesity is for school and programs to help children be healthy by putting more physical education classes that teaches them about nutrition and keeps them physically active. The biggest way people can go to stop obesity is to educate their children from a young age to eat healthy so as they grow up they can choose to live a healthy lifestyle and be physically active.

- ● High blood pressure
- ● Stroke
- ● Type 2 Diabetes
- ● Metabolic Syndrome

A big part of being obese is genetics. Some research shows that obesity can run in the family and could affect how people metabolise food or store energy(calories). Some genes can control appetite and it's hard to tell when you're full. Some genes can make people more responsive to the taste, smell and sight of food, some genes can make people most likely to not be active and exercise and some genes make the body burn less calories than others. People can not control the effects of the gene.(3).
Fast food and eating unhealthy is an obvious contributing factor of obesity. In 2000 Americans spent 110 million dollars on fast food, compared to 1970 when Americans spent three million. Every day, one in four American visit a fast food restaurant and an average person buys three fast food hamburgers a week. People blame fast food restaurants for obesity because they seem to be everywhere with three million fast food restaurants worldwide, the food is so high in calories, it’s cheap and they advertise it. An average family spends 1,000 to 2,000 dollars a year. In 20112012, there were about 11,700 cases of people getting hospital treatment for obesity. Every year more than twice the amount of women get hospital treatment than men. Data shows that 65 percent of men are now overweight or obese and 58 percent of women are overweight or obese. Child obesity is also a big problem, about a third of children aged 2 to 15 were overweight or obese in 2011 with 31 percent of boys being overweight or obese and 28 percent of girls being overweight or obese. Those numbers are rapidly increasing in current years.(4)
